Synopsis

This documentary is a captivating account of the defense of Wake Island by a small contingent of United States Marines and civilian contractors. From December 8th until December 23rd, 1941 the defenders thwarted an aerial attack and an attempted amphibious landing from a naval task force before finally being overwhelmed by the third attempt by the Japanese Imperial Navy.

Mr. Wukovits talked about his book, [Pacific Alamo: The Battle for Wake Island], published by New American Library. Military historian Wukovits described the full story of the battle of Wake Island. On December 11, 1941, in an attempt to land on the atoll, Japanese planes bombed twelve aircraft. Marine, Navy and Army personnel, and civilian construction workers stationed on the island launched a defense. The result was a protracted and costly battle for Japan, in which American casualties numbered 124, while Japanese losses were approximately 1000. The author talked about his research, including Japanese reports and interviews with survivors.
